SHENZHEN — According to Rhodium Group’s China investment watch, Chinese corporations have made over $1 billion in investments in Michigan since 2000 through the construction and expansion of facilities as well as the purchase of businesses with a presence in the state.
The group estimates China’s investment at $27.9 billion nationally.
According to Brian Connors, the international development manager for the Michigan Economic Development Corp., more than 100 large Chinese corporations have made investments in Michigan.
According to fDi Markets, a Financial Times investment monitoring service, eight Chinese companies that have launched automotive projects in Michigan over the past ten years are among the investors. More than 1,000 employment and $235 million in investments were anticipated to be generated by the projects. The fDi report analyzes new investment initiatives and sizable expansions; mergers and acquisitions as well as other equity-based or non-equity investments are not covered.
In an effort to increase that investment, Governor Rick Snyder is leading a delegation in China for the next nine days to promote economic development.
The majority of Chinese investment in Michigan is being made by auto suppliers who want to be close to their Big Three customers.
Usually, they begin with Michigan-based sales and distribution facilities. Following that, businesses can start up activities for research and development and eventually production facilities.
MEDC cited eight Chinese companies that had previously announced 11 sizable investment projects in Michigan. Projects related to retail were excluded. The automobile sector is the focus of every initiative. Acquisitions, like Wanxiang Group’s purchase of insolvent A123 Systems this year, are not included in the list. Shanghai Automotive Industries Corp. (SAIC) USA, a car manufacturer (purchasing, logistics, and engineering), is located in Birmingham.
Changan Automobile Group, an auto producer (research and design), is located in Plymouth. Yangfeng USA, a maker of auto trim, is located in Harrison Township.
Buena Vista Township’s Pacific Century Motors is an automobile supplier.
M-Tex, an auto supplier in Detroit, provides mold texturing for the tooling industry. Jinzhou Halla Equipment Electrical Equipment Co. is another option.
Detroit-based auto supplier China Automotive Systems (sales, marketing, and support).
